THE HISTORY OF LAKE AMMERSEE
The emergence 16,000 years ago
The Ammersee was formed around 16,000 years ago when the ice-age glaciers gradually melted and shaped the landscape. Over the millennia, its surface area was reduced by natural deposits from tributaries and today measures around 47 square kilometers. Its banks are characterized by gently rolling hills, historic villages and extensive forests, creating an impressive cultural diversity. Archaeological finds, such as tools and pottery fragments, point to the first settlements as early as the Neolithic period. The region also played an important role in ancient times, as impressively demonstrated by the remains of settlements and old Roman roads.
A place for fishermen and clergy
In medieval times, many monasteries such as Andechs Monastery and other centers of spiritual communities were built around the lake. Fishing also has a long tradition. The lake is home to numerous species of fish such as the well-known and prized Ammersee whitefish, which is still caught today and served in the surrounding inns and restaurants.
The Ammersee today
Today, the Ammersee is a nature and recreation area whose surroundings are characterized by forests, meadows and moors. Various nature conservation projects ensure that the landscape with its many, sometimes rare animal and plant species and thus its biodiversity is preserved.
Villages such as Dießen, Herrsching and Schondorf offer traditional Bavarian culture and the delightful charm of the foothills of the Alps, as well as modern leisure activities.

The first tourists
During the Romantic period in the 19th century, with its enthusiasm for nature and travel, the lake attracted more and more poets, painters and wealthy Munich citizens. In 1879, the steamboat service, which still exists today, was introduced and developed into another magnet for visitors. At the same time, many stately villas and summer residences of the upper middle classes were built on the shores.
