From the middle of the 19th century, Munich painters and artists discovered the graceful shores and visual axes of Lake Starnberg as a source of inspiration for their artistic work. But it was the construction of the railroad from Munich to Garmisch along the western shore of the lake that led to a real building boom in the western communities. Towards the end of the century, all the box seats were taken, so that soon even the slopes along the lake were built on extensively.

The eastern shore of Lake Starnberg, on the other hand, remained much quieter and more tranquil for decades due to its more difficult accessibility. Similar to today, even back then it was considered by many to be a healthy and natural alternative to city life, which was often perceived as stressful and noisy. The often longed-for idyll of the Bavarian country house went hand in hand with the desire for a certain degree of self-sufficiency. The romantic idea of self-sufficiency, a natural, original and healthy life, attracted Munich residents to the shores of the lake.

Just like back then, Munich residents still appreciate the tranquillity and seclusion of the lakeside communities today. Unlike back then, however, there is no longer any reason to do without the amenities of the big city thanks to the now ideally developed connections to the city. Upper Bavarian tradition and down-to-earthness are combined here with an upscale lifestyle and cosmopolitan sophistication like nowhere else. Somewhat in the slipstream of Lake Starnberg, the communities around its smaller and even more idyllic neighbors such as Weßlinger See, Pilsensee, Wörthsee and Ammersee have also established themselves as highly sought-after alternatives to Munich city life in recent decades.
