Bakery and Pizza Pockets

In London, Tel Aviv and, since mid-March, on Amalienstraße too, there is a branch of the popular bakery chain ‘Zeit für Brot’. As well as handmade Bioland baked goods, you’ll also find a wide selection of fresh breads and sweet pastries, all prepared right there in the open bakery.

Napoli Dough on Türkenstraße specialises in panuozzi, the pizza pockets typical of Naples. Whether savoury with mortadella and pistachio cream (Bella Mortadella) or vegan with beetroot and pear compote, every pizza fan is sure to find something to their taste there.

At Zeit für Brot, you can not only enjoy delicious and absolutely fresh bread specialities, but also watch the master bakers at work as they practise their craft with such passion.

Sweets & More for Advanced Learners

The LouLou daytime bar has been a new addition to Türkenstraße since April. Stainless-steel tables and retro red combine here to create a Scandinavian-French fusion. And the food on offer is certainly impressive too. How about, for example, beef tartare with pickled egg yolk and mustard seeds?

At the Lavy Café on Hohenzollernstraße, matcha creations and heavenly Japanese patisserie are served. A strawberry matcha latte, for example, or matcha cheesecake. And Kaiserschmarrn lovers simply must pop into ‘Superschmarrn’ on Schellingstraße. Shall it be the ‘Heidi’ version, served in the classic style with apple sauce and almonds? Or would you prefer ‘Lini’ with Nutella, raspberries, blueberries and desiccated coconut? Or perhaps ‘Gitte’, with vanilla sauce, hot raspberries and brittle?

The Bravo Grande has a stylish and extremely welcoming atmosphere – with the ceiling mirror as a particular highlight. Italian specialities and drinks are served here.

At Bravo Grande on Friedrichstraße, the culinary focus is entirely on Italy. The mirror on the ceiling encourages a bit of flirting, whilst the bar in the centre serves as the hub of conversation. On the menu: Negroni, Aperol, Campari, Spritz and Sbagliato.

Where coffee enthusiasts queue up

Coffee lovers certainly won’t be able to resist this place: the two Man vs. Machine shops in Schwabing draw you into their coffee paradise with the aroma of roasted coffee that wafts up to your nose as you walk past.

The Ohana Day Café offers the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle outside. Here you can enjoy coffee, matcha, smoothies, croissants and delicious sandwiches. There are two Man vs. Machine cafés in Schwabing. On Hohenzollernstraße and Schellingstraße, it’s all about the coffee from their in-house roastery, for which coffee enthusiasts queue up.

Where international traditions come to life on your plate

View over flowering geraniums into a shady beer garden with guests at laid tables under old chestnut trees.
Located in the heart of Schwabing for 100 years: the Kaisergarten. Lovingly designed – both inside and out – guests are treated to Bavarian-inspired cuisine with international influences.

The Kaisergarten, opposite St Ursula’s Church, boasts a century-old tradition. The shaded beer garden, with its ancient chestnut trees, is a welcome meeting place in summer. Inside the restaurant, plenty of warm wood and tiles create a cosy atmosphere. The Kaisergarten’s cuisine is Bavarian-inspired, served with beer from Ayinger-Bräu and wine from Austria, Germany and Italy.

A real culinary gem in Schwabing: Petit Fritz, which offers delights such as oysters and superb wines.

At Petit Fritz, on the other hand, everything revolves around France. This offshoot of Chez Fritz has been synonymous with French brasserie and oyster evenings for many years in the French-influenced district of Haidhausen. Petit Fritz impresses with its bistro concept: oysters, tartines topped with boudin noir, duck rillettes, salmon or Camembert, accompanied by homemade pâtés, epitomise French savoir-vivre here.

Greek classics are served at Kalypso on Agnesstraße. The selection of starters, the moussaka and the Kalypso platter featuring gyros, bifteki, souvlaki and lamb chops are excellent. The wine list impresses with top-quality Greek, Italian and German wines. And later in the evening, thanks to ouzo, a party atmosphere is guaranteed.

A modern Elisabethmarkt, the delightful English Garden

A unique view of the lake, a cosy atmosphere and particularly good Italian cuisine – that’s what the Seehaus in the English Garden is all about.

Right in the heart of Schwabing, between Elisabethstraße, Arcisstraße and Nordendstraße, lies Elisabethplatz with its popular market. The foundation stone for the new Elisabethmarkt was laid in the summer of 2021, and the work was completed a good three years later. The 23 stalls now have a more modern look and a fresh design, yet the market has lost none of its original charm. You really must try the Israeli street food at Fizzy Bubele whilst you’re there. The pita pockets, filled with a variety of delicacies such as homemade falafel, hummus, chicken, vegetables and herbs, are a real treat.

And then, of course, there are the dining options in the English Garden. The cosy Seehaus is a popular restaurant with lake views and international cuisine. The 1804 Restaurant Hirschau is synonymous with fine dining and offers Bavarian dishes with a modern twist.

Simply good food without all the fuss, served in a cosy atmosphere – that’s what the Austrian-inspired Das Tschecherl is all about.

And you can enjoy excellent Austrian dishes in a pleasant, minimalist setting at Das Tschecherl on Amalienstraße.

Schwabing’s cuisine, and its street food in particular, is a feast for the senses! With its creative variety, unusual flavours and vibrant atmosphere, Munich tastes of freedom, indulgence and pure joie de vivre.

What the restaurant scene reveals about Schwabing

Twelve addresses spread across just a few streets, plus a newly built market with 23 stalls: that’s not the sort of thing you’d find in a neighbourhood where there’s no one left in the evenings. The density of properties between Amalienstraße, Türkenstraße and Elisabethplatz shows that people actually live in Schwabing, not just work there. When valuing a flat, this isn’t just a side note – it’s part of the location.
