Refined yet down-to-earth – Grünwald’s top spots for foodies
Between gourmet cuisine and pub culture

The Alte Wirt in Grünwald celebrates culinary excellence at the very highest level. The hotel, owned by the Portenlänger family, has been in existence since 1919. In 2022, Jakob Portenlänger, representing the fourth generation of the family, took over this long-established establishment. The organic restaurant masterfully combines authentic Bavarian culinary craftsmanship with modern international cuisine. It is, above all, the regional, seasonal dishes that have earned the Alter Wirt a listing in the Michelin Guide.

Equally traditional, exceptionally stylish, yet quite different is the Forsthaus Wörnbrunn, where Munich’s leading caterers, Florian Gürster and Yvonne Mehrfeld, welcome guests to extraordinary event experiences. On the programme: atmospheric moments and special menus. The classic event is the Brunch Club – which, incidentally, includes childcare – to which the Forsthaus extends an invitation every first Sunday of the month.

Lovers of Italian cuisine have several favourite spots in Grünwald. The Ristorante at the Schlosshotel Grünwald combines culinary excellence, superb service and a stylish, elegant ambience. The Italian cuisine served there enhances any romantic dinner, family celebration or corporate event. In summer in particular, the magnificent terrace is the perfect place to linger and savour the moment, and you’re sure to find a fine bottle or two in the extensive wine cellar to complement the occasion.

Another classic offering Italian cuisine is H’ugo’s, which has been delighting diners in Grünwald for over five years now with the finest Mediterranean flavours from Italy. The food at Ettore da Elters is also first-class. However, Ettore isn’t just the place to go for a quick pizza or pasta after a tennis match at Elter Sports. Word has long since spread throughout Grünwald that Ettore is just the place for a fine dinner. Gamberi alle griglia or Streccetti di manzo alle griglia – just the thought of his perfectly balanced fish or meat dishes is enough to make your mouth water.
A Culinary Journey Around the World

Chez Mandarin – located in the same building as RIEDEL’s offices – will be serving French-inspired cuisine with Asian touches from March 2026. The man in charge is Gerhard Gleinser, still well known to many from the Bogenhausener Hof, which he ran for twenty years. Chez Mandarin is a lounge, day bar and brasserie all in one, and the place to be for a quick espresso, a light lunch, an after-work drink or an evening meal.
A visit to the Chang Restaurant on Grünwald’s historic market square promises a special culinary journey. Specialities from Thailand and Japan, complemented by the scents and flavours of their neighbouring countries, come together there to create a marvellous variety of tastes.
Miyabi combines the very finest sushi, such as Spicy Tuna Maki or Truffle Salsa Maki, with tempting Vietnamese cuisine featuring classics like the Vietnamese national soup, pho bo, to create a gourmet experience. The Jaipur restaurant serves typical Indian classics, such as dishes from the tandoori oven. And Kritamos brings back memories of your last holiday in Greece.

For anyone who needs a bit of relaxation with some superfood amidst all these flavour explosions, the RIEDEL team recommends Juicy & Bowls in the Schlosspassage. With her café – which Eva Fischer opened during the pandemic – the Grünwald resident has really struck a chord. Her smoothies and salad bowls, the delicious soups of the day, bagels and, of course, her freshly baked cakes are right at the top of the ‘balanced diet and nutrient-rich indulgence’ category.
Places to enjoy around Grünwald

In Pullach, the Alte Brennerei offers a creative Bavarian fine-dining experience and a remarkable selection of wines. The Alpine cuisine of head chef Sebastian Fasching, who brilliantly reinterprets classic Alpine dishes and turns even a traditional snack platter into a culinary experience, has also won over the gourmet critics. Last year, the renowned restaurant guide Gault&Millau awarded the Alte Brennerei two toques.
Also in Pullach, Villa Antica serves not only dishes based on sophisticated recipes from many Italian regions but also seasonal specialities. ‘Costoletta di cervo’, for example – a herb-flavoured venison cutlet served with Radicchio Trevisano. Or ‘Branzino al sale’, sea bass baked in a salt crust.
The Waldwirtschaft in Großhesselohe exudes Bavarian cosiness. Not only does it have a fantastic beer garden, but this traditional inn also boasts a variety of function rooms, offering the perfect setting for celebrations on a wide range of occasions.
Another inn with a long history is the Gutshof Menterschwaige in Harlaching. The restaurant serves Bavarian specialities, vegetarian dishes and fondue – including for groups. And the stunningly beautiful beer garden is the perfect spot for a casual get-together with friends.
The Harlachinger Jagdschlössl is widely renowned for its steaks cooked on a lava stone grill, crisp, fresh salads, hearty snacks and natural, creative game dishes. At the restaurant of the Landhotel Klostermaier in Icking, the menu ranges from Wiener schnitzel and Fleischpflanzerl to pike-perch fillet. At the Rittergütl in Irschenhausen, pork knuckles are on the menu on Thursdays. And the Gasthof zum Wildpark in Straßlach also offers culinary delights. In the beer garden and the rustic dining rooms, meat and sausage products from the Roiderer family’s own butcher’s shop are served. The Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry has repeatedly awarded the highest rating of three diamonds for this excellent Bavarian cuisine.
And at the Käfer Delicatessen Market in Solln, you can do more than just shop for excellent items from the tried-and-tested Käfer range. Next door at the Käfer Deli, you can meet up for breakfast with coffee and a croissant, for lunch with a croque monsieur and a ‘Power Salad’, in the afternoon for a slice of the legendary raspberry cake, or after work for a fine Crémant.
In Grünwald and the surrounding area, life can truly be enjoyed – especially when it comes to food.
What the restaurant scene reveals about a location
A town with a population of around 11,000 would not normally have such a wide range of dining options. The fact that the restaurants in Grünwald range from a Michelin-listed establishment to several Italian eateries and venues serving Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese and Indian cuisine, right through to a superfood café, says something about the purchasing power of the local population and their attachment to their neighbourhood. Anyone interested in property in Grünwald will find the local dining scene a reliable indicator of a neighbourhood that is used on a daily basis, not just at the weekend.
