Historic Building Architecture: Styles and Eras

Last updated: 3. June 2020 | Reading time: 1 minute

20th-century architecture was essentially shaped by four architectural styles. The design and concept of each architectural style depend on the technological and structural possibilities of the respective era.

The Gründerzeit – 1870 to 1914

Old buildings from this period are characterised by their solid, robust construction and a sense of grandeur. Large rooms and windows, as well as stucco ceilings up to four metres high, are characteristic features of this architectural style.

The interwar period – 1919 to 1945

These houses are often inspired by Bauhaus architecture and designed with functionality and practicality in mind. With a simple exterior featuring plain plastered façades or brickwork, their interiors impress with a well-thought-out layout and light-filled rooms with ceiling heights of up to 2.80 metres.

Reconstruction – 1945 to 1969

Post-war architectural style is characterised by standardised, mass-produced housing. Most houses from the 1950s were built as terraced houses or in small housing estates. It was not until the 1960s that building standards began to improve again.

Postmodernism – 1970 to 1994

The architectural language of postmodernism drew on various elements from earlier periods, reassembling them in a free-form arrangement. Buildings from the 1990s are architecturally appealing and largely meet today’s standards of comfort and technology.
